About Suiseki & Viewing Stones
Suiseki is the Japanese art of stone appreciation.
Formed through time by wind and water, stones can take infinite sizes, shapes, colours and textures which remind us of natural objects or scenery.
Suiseki also known as viewing stones are often placed on carved wooden stands called daizas or trays of sand called suiban.
Living in Devon is a great place to be for suiseki hunting. The geology is among the most varied in the UK. There are so many good places to find stones you really must be careful not to bring home all of the ones you find otherwise you can end up with three tons of rocks in the garden waiting for stands.
There is everything from the coast and beaches to the moors and caves. These stones are mainly all collected and by me.
I learned to carved daiza years ago and made a huge leap forward in my abilities after watching Sean Smith from the USA for a period of ten days when he came to the UK years ago. It was a sharp learning curve.
I use wood that is from ethically sourced places such as sustainable forests or antique furniture that is now being repurposed. Some of the wood I use is over 250 years old.
