Snake Bark Maple Root over Rock
(Acer davidii)
Age ± 1999
Height - cm
Origin - UK
Pot - terracotta Training pot
This interesting tree with bark that has white stripes was grown from seed between 1992-9 and rooted on a rock.
The roots have a very secure grip of the rock after 25 years.
Ramification is developing slowly.
Probably good as a garden/patio bonsai because of its size.
It is a fast-growing plant, which will rapidly produce a thick trunk with lots of character. The attractive leaves turn purple to scarlet in autumn.
Like other maples it requires some protection in areas where winter temperatures fall below -3°C.
It prefers full sun in the growing season, but it also benefits from partial shade on the hottest days. Never allow to dry out completely during the growing season; nor should they be overwatered. Wait until the surface is slightly dry before watering. In spring and summer you might have to water twice a day. In winter, make sure the compost remains moist but not waterlogged.
