Shishigashira is a great and rare variety for growing bonsai at a small size.
This tree was created in 2022 by air layering from a 35 year old tree, so it has not been grafted and has a pot full of very good healthy roots.
It has the potential to be a really good shohin bonsai.
The nebari is shaping up well and should stay covered for a couple more seasons to mature nicely.
It does have a large wound on the back of the trunk where a large branch was removed but that is closing over really well and with a couple more years it should be totally closed.
By then the rest of the branches will have been shaped and it will be on it's way to being a great shohin sized bonsai.
The cultivar 'Shishigashira' is a variety that is rare and very sought after both in Japan and here in the UK.
The variety has dense stout deeply cut leaves that are borne on very short stems. In good years for autumn colour 'Shishigashira' has spectacular vibrant orange & red colours.
As simple to cultivate as any Japanese maple however it does require a slightly different pruning method which is quite simple to master.
Frost hardy, vigorous and tough. The delightful and delicate leaves can create the most breathtaking display of colour in autumn.
Keep the tree well watered in summer and fertilize regularly throughout the growing season. Protect from strong winds when in leaf in early spring.
Best autumn colour is achieved if the tree is kept in full sun but never allow to dry out completly.
