Similar to the Japanese White Pine these very hardy trees make good subjects for bonsai.
Blue-green needles appear in bundles of 5. On mature trees cones 3-6" long appear and then mature from blue green to brown and contain large edible seeds, pine nuts.
These seeds have a deep dormancy built in which must be broken in order to germinate well.
The seeds will need a fairly long period of stratification* that will improve germination.
* Soak overnight, drain and place in a 50/50 mixture of barely damp, peat and sharp sand. Store at room temperature for 8 weeks followed by 12 weeks in the fridge.
Sow in individual pots in the spring.
