Growing Japanese Black Pine from Seed

Care guide for Japanese Black Pine

(You will receive plants from the 2022 or 2023 seed crop with first root training done)

(Bonsai Pictures are for example only)

These young trees have been grown in small 6cm & 7cm soft pots using traditional methods for their early development.

From there its up to you how big you let them get.

Being a natural product there is of course some variation in size and colour between the plants but this doesn't really matter at this stage in the development.

If you do however have any specific criteria such as wanting shorter or taller trees just let me know in a message and I will pick out the plants that would best fit your request.

The first root cut has been done on these young pines to make them suitable for making short thick shohin sized bonsai. With the correct growing methods good results should be achieved by 5-7 years.

The Japanese Black Pine is a classic outdoor, evergreen species to use for Bonsai. They have an upright habit, stiff, dark green needles in pairs and dark, fissured bark that gives the trunks an impressive rugged appearance.

They are double flush in growth habit so good branch development is fairly quick. Hardy in most areas. During the growing season place in full sun. They dislike constant moisture so be careful not to over water and ensure a good free draining soil. (1:1:1 Akadama:Pumice:Grit).
