Cotoneaster Exposed Root/ Root over Rock Starters are a great choice for bonsai growers to create these unusual styles.
The hard work has been done over the last two years to get extra long roots trained so that the tree will be ready for styling in an exposed root or root over rock style.
They will be supplied with the roots wrapped in plastic and you will need to pot them into suitable soil and pots. I suggest one of the square cascade training pots available here.

Grow them on for a couple of seasons and gradually expose and arrange the thickened roots from the top until the desired length is reached to create the exposed root style.
Or
Wait until spring and wrap the long roots around a piece of nice stone to create the root over rock style.
They are bird and bee friendly and very easy to grow and train. You will receive a plant of the 2022 crop like those in the picture, with first root and trunk training already done.
These starters feature lots of curves and are ideal for mame and shohin bonsai. With small glossy green leaves and many pink-tinged white flowers, they make a great addition to any bonsai collection.
