CAPE SUNDEW
Drosera capensis
(Picture of large one is for example only and not for sale)
Generally easy to grow, these fascinating plants are a great way to keep flies under control.
I use them placed near any plant with problem flies around it, such as fungus gnats and they are soon dealt with effectively and in an environmentally friendly manner.
The plants catch all kinds of small flies including fungus gnats, whitefly, fruitflies and houseflies.
Grow in a well lit sunny position away from heat sources like radiators and keep the drip tray topped up with clean water. In areas of hard water it is better to use rainwater or bottled water.
Avoid any contact with chemicals such as air-freshners and other fly sprays etc.
They prefer a nutrient free soil of peat and sharp sand.
They have small flowers which will stand up above the main plant and if left to mature it will set seed and self propagate, multiplying to fill the pot it is in. They also spread in the pot by sending up shoots from the roots.
