Notes on Nematodes

The season is well under way for treating your trees with Nematodes to kill the dreaded vine weevil.

There are a few brands available and they come in various sized packs to treat different sized areas.

They are very effective against vine weevil and will dramatically reduce their numbers so that your tree roots will be in good condition for the coming season.

When your new nematodes arrive it is important to follow the instructions on the pack.

when you have made the mixture of water and nematodes and are ready to apply them it would be a good idea to check that they are ok.

You will need a x10 magnifying glass or even better a x20. Anyway you will want something to magnify them as you can't see them with the naked eye.

Place a drop of your mixture on something like a small clean mirror or a piece of clean glass.

Allow them to warm up if you have just taken them out of the fridge.

With plenty of light once the nematodes come into focus you should see lots of tiny worms wriggling about.

If they are not wriggling and mobile then you have a bad batch of nematodes that will be no good at the task in hand.

You should contact the seller of the nematodes and inform them of the problem.

Most good sellers will be happy to replace them with another fresh pack.

Apply them according to the recommended rate and that's all there is to it. They will continue their work until the soil temperature drops below 10-12C.

The are several companies. There are suppliers on Ebay.

There are some garden centres stocking them in plastic cans that contain little gel balls with the nematodes in them that you just sprinkle on the soil surface but I have found them to be unreliable because of bad storage.

Apply them at this time of year from now, July, thought to when we get the first drop in temperature. The soil needs to be warm and damp. Read the instructions.
