Latest at the Nursery June 2024.

It has been some time since my last update on the events taking place at the tunnel.

Getting to the nursery and completing all the necessary tasks has been quite challenging this year.

Fortunately, I have now fully recuperated from the chest infection that incapacitated me for several months, and I am now faced with the challenge of trying to make up for lost time.

The satsuki were spectacular with their colours brightening up the place and bringing real joy to my heart.

Deadheading the flowers and pruning them in preparation for next year has been a huge undertaking.

In addition, I have been occupied with collecting more cuttings from the azaleas.

Some of you that have made purchases lately may have had a few extra bits put into your delivery free of charge. These little surprises will continue while I am clearing space and downsizing the nursery and as long as the stock allows. I need to ease the work load and I know they will be going to good homes.

Also, time has been spent tidying up the remaining trees at the nursery.

Several of the trident maples are now ready. I have both regular tridents and some that I have propagated from a tiny-leaved trident I purchased a while back. They are expected to grow into beautiful mame and shohin trees.

More Sekka Hinoki are ready of a smaller size which has enabled a lower price than the larger ones that needed to be wired straight. The trick is to buy the young materials before they get bigger and I have got to pot them up which means I have to increase the price.

There are some young Japanese maples in both red and green varieties for those of you that wish to start your bonsai almost from scratch. They are now 2 years old and have proved they can get through winter.

Along with those young plants there are a few Chinese Red Pine (Pinus tabuliformis). These are the pines that you will see drawn in many scrolls that are depicting the Chinese mountain landscapes.

More varieties will be coming soon including some young Itoigawa junipers.

I have also made a few mame sized trees that are now ready along with a very few starters that have been trained in long deep training pots so that they can be styled in 'exposed root' or 'root over rock' style.

more to come....
